21 Weeks!
Update:
21 Weeks
19 Weeks to go!
(Can you believe we are now farther in than we are counting down? Seems ridiculous!)
About 132 days left..
Depending on where you look online, we are either a banana or a carrot this week. Seems about the same in length.
Kermie Update:
Your baby now weighs about three-quarters of a pound and is approximately 10 1/2 inches long — the length of a carrot. You may soon feel like she's practicing martial arts as her initial fluttering movements turn into full-fledged kicks and nudges. You may also discover a pattern to her activity as you get to know her better. (Seems like I feel Kerm most at night, while watching TV or laying in bed reading. Although over the past couple days he's made himself known at other points in the day) With all the movement, it's shocking to think your fetus sleeps as much as a newborn, perhaps 12 to 14 hours per day! In other developments, your baby's eyebrows and lids are present now. Whatever I'm eating now can be transferred to the baby. That's because he swallows a bit of amniotic fluid each day (for nutrition, hydration, and to practice digesting), so he eats whatever's on your menu — and gets to put those developing taste buds to good use. The taste of the amniotic fluid differs from day to day depending on what you've eaten (spicy enchilada one day, sweet carrots another). And that smorgasbord of tastes won't be lost on your baby. That's because your little one has very developed taste buds already. In fact, researchers have noted that babies who were exposed to certain tastes in utero via the amniotic fluid were more eager to eat foods with that same taste after birth. Want your baby to eat his or her broccoli later? Eat yours now! (That means I need to get back into the taste for broccoli myself.... mom responsibilities already!!!)
Carin Update:
Biggest complaint this week - sort of a constant battle with heartburn. Bad, lava-flowing style heartburn. I've been afraid of it since I got pregnant and had to go off my once daily (for 7 years) Nexium, but thankfully it really wasn't too bad...until now. It's definitely a more intense burning than I had before, and seems to not really have a cause (i.e. hot peppers that I still torture myself with on chicken salad sandwiches...it's the little things! or Frank's Red hot which I use sparingly) - it just seems to happen. I haven't really eaten anything today yet, but still suffering the burn. I really hope this isn't a pattern or a view of things to come. 19 weeks is a long time to suffer this type of burn!
Otherwise I'm feeling pretty good. Not too big, but big enough I think I actually look pregnant to strangers, although at the beach I probably look like its a beer belly. Still don't care, still wearing bikini and no one can shame me out of that! I do get tired doing little things, and have had a few headaches (some debilitating) that slow me down, but nothing ridiculous. First pregnant dentist appointment tomorrow. Praying for no cavities. Still bitter about lack of Italian Sub sandwiches in my life.
Here I am this morning:
Doug/House/Us Update:
Doug had a successful trip to San Diego last week, and managed to avoid 90% of the heatwave we were experiencing here, instead enjoying 71 degrees where it was "chilly". Huge shock when he got into Newark and it was a balmy 105.
Possibly a short trip to Virginia this week (Wed-Fri) but nothing set in stone yet. I'll take that over a week-long cross-country trip any day. I bought him his first baby present too, and he loved it -
Big baby news this week - we bought the crib mattress we had been researching! It went on sale on Amazon and I figured, why not? That was a bit of a wake-up call, although I think when it actually arrives it will be more shocking to both of us! So Sunday I got motivated after the beach and started the process of cleaning out Kerm's room. I packed tubs full of old desk stuff and emptied the big "cabinet" we've got in there, which will move to the basement. We (Doug) moved the bookshelf downstairs to the guest room, and started making plans for moving the TV into our bedroom (YAY!!). Doug will clear out my old computer and then we'll be able to dismantle my desk and decide what we'll do with it - maybe sell it, maybe store it. (Barely ever used but won't be necessary until god knows when)
We also registered for the Childbirth 101 class at the hospital where I'll deliver - for the end of September. After my last appointment, the doctor recommended I schedule the class, as there are only 12 spots in each class and they fill up pretty quick. I'll be about 30 weeks then, which is about average. And by that point, I will be allowing myself to actually think about the whole childbirth thing. Right now we go about 4 weeks at a time, as to not overwhelm myself with all that is to come..
Also I have been contemplating registry stuff and need to get a good rainy weekend day to finally head to Babies R Us to check things out in person. With a busy schedule bringing us through the end of September, I think the next few weeks are going to fly by!! Only about 1 month till we are in Denmark!!! Can't wait :)

HALFWAY THERE!
Update:
20 weeks!
20 weeks to go!
(about 140 days)
Can't believe we are at the halfway point already!
Um, really a cantaloupe? That seems immense.
Kermie Update:
Your baby weighs about 10 1/2 ounces now. He's also around 6 1/2 inches long from head to bottom and about 10 inches from head to heel — the length of a banana. (The way your baby is measured changes now.) And while your baby is definitely getting bigger, there's still plenty of growing room in there, which allows him to twist and turn (and allows you to feel his acrobatics!). He's swallowing more these days, which is good practice for his digestive system. (we saw that on the ultrasound last week!!) He's also producing meconium, a black, sticky by-product of digestion. This gooey substance will accumulate in his bowels, and you'll see it in his first soiled diaper (although some babies pass meconium in the womb or during delivery). [Yay.]
Carin Update:
"The top of your uterus is about level with your belly button" (and according to the doctor this morning, it sure is - and everything is "growing perfectly"). Today's doctors appointment was quick & easy, and after a heartbeat check (strong and healthy at 152 bpm) and some questions, I was outta there. He was all excited that we aren't finding out what we're having - "I never get to yell ITS A BOY anymore! No one wants surprises, its lame." No appointments now until Aug 18.
Over the last couple nights when I get into bed (or even laying on the couch to watch TV) I have felt some actual strong movements - kicks or punches maybe? I put my hand there and actually felt it on my palm! It was strange and crazy. I have tried a couple times for Doug to feel, but no such luck yet - of course when he puts his hand there, all movement stops! I know it won't be the only time, and there will be more (and stronger) kicks to come, but it's such a unique/weird feeling that I want him in on the action!
I am still feeling good - although doing some normal stuff like cleaning does make me more tired than it used to. I take my time to relax, but still trying to remain active so I don't turn totally to mush over the next couple months. I want to be able to walk all over Denmark without needing a nap every few hours! My weight is still under control (but not the 10 pounds they say you should have gained by this point...), and I haven't had a drastic gain over the last month. I guess from here on out it will be a half pound to a full pound a week (so they say). Those numbers will be fun to see on the scale...
My favorite thing lately has been guys driving by in cars "checking me out" - and I just wish they could see what they were really looking at! It always makes me laugh out loud at them.
Here I am this morning, in the bathroom at work, per usual:
Doug/House/Us Update:
Had a great weekend, Doug's parents came to visit us! They came down Friday night and so we had a little extra time together which was nice. Had breakfast on the deck, ran some errands, had lunch at Cheeburger Cheeburger (which was delicious), the girls went shopping to the outlets and the guys did some more work installing sprinklers on a timer for the front yard! Now when Doug is gone I barely have to worry about watering, only turning on the line for the garden in the morning. So happy they got it all done! Then Sunday we had brunch with my parents too at Salt Creek Grille (also delicious), and then after they headed out we went to Bob & Gene's pool for a swim all afternoon! With temps in the 90's it was perfect - relaxing and refreshing.
Doug heads out to San Diego today for the week (boo), but I am hoping the time will fly by. This is the last scheduled big trip for a while, so I'll get through it of course. but HURRY BACK DOUG! :)

Some Home Updates
Like I always say, Doug is a busy boy over every weekend. Since he spends a lot of time traveling to Virginia (and elsewhere), he likes to come home and do "projects". This past weekend was no exception. We had previously dug up old patio pavers that were dirty, old and in some spots decaying. We were left a huge sand pit and no idea what to do with it! Most of the spring and summer have passed before we decided on mulch, slate stepping stones and eventually some plants or flowers. This weekend Doug went to work:
We need a few more slate stepping stones but we're 99% there! Looks amazing!

I helped with this part :)
Truck in the backyard!
How pretty!

19 Weeks
Update:
19 Weeks
21 Weeks to go
(146ish days!)
The baby is as big as a Large Mango!
![]()
This picture is much better this week!
Kermie Update:
Your baby weighs about 8 1/2 ounces and measures 6 inches, head to bottom — about the size of a large heirloom tomato (or mango!). Arms and legs are finally in proportion, neurons are now connected between the brain and muscles, and cartilage throughout the body is turning to bone. All these upgrades combine to give your baby more control over limb movements. Her kidneys continue to make urine and the hair on her scalp is sprouting. A waxy protective coating called the vernix caseosa is forming on her skin to prevent it from pickling in the amniotic fluid. Vernix caseosa, is a greasy white substance made of lanugo, oil, and dead skin cells (yum!). (Picture yourself after a nine-month bath, and the need for protection makes sense.)
The best part of this week actually happened this morning!
We went this morning for the "big" ultrasound - the Level II Scan, where some people can find out what they are having if they so choose. When it came time for the between the legs shot, the ultrasound tech turned the screen away, so Doug and I are none the wiser! I know this is killing some of you, but it will be so fun to find out in December! Anyway, they scan for all parts - measuring and making sure things are growing on schedule and the appropriate due date still applies (it does). Brain, heart (all 4 chambers pumping away at 150 beats per minute), kidneys, hands, feet, leg bones, arm bones, spine, ribs.... you name it, we saw it!! We even saw little lips at one point and some swallowing motions. It was absolutely INSANE and a great way to start Monday. I highly recommend it to anyone. Things are looking perfect, although Kermie had his head directly on my bladder and was sort of curled up and this time did not want to cooperate as much and we had to poke and prod and I had to roll over to get better views. All in all, they got all the info & photos they needed. We probably won't be seeing another scan until week 36, if my normal doctor wants to see about how big Kermie is at that point. Otherwise, that was it until the real thing!
Still have to do the NetiPot at least every night before bed or else I wake up with a headache. Also seem to need a little bit of caffeine or else I get a headache and nothing cures them at that point. Have been experiencing pretty normal bouts with restless legs (which I used to get occasionally before) and it seems aggravated now. I had asked one doctor if there was anything I could do and she told me she used to wrap ace bandages around her calves/ankles and it helped. I figured I would try anything to get rid of the terrible jumpy legs.. and my dad offered his 'compression socks' from his torn muscle last summer. Sure enough, put one on the bad leg and voila - the jumpy-ness stopped!! It's amazing. I look kind of funny with this white knee sock on one leg, but I am able to fall asleep! So I've got the big weird maternity pillow and one sock up to my knee. SEXY. As for week 19, I am feeling pretty normal, save for the growing belly. Went to the beach on Sunday and after getting in the water a few times, I was WIPED out when I got home! Needed to rehydrate and rest on the couch for the afternoon. We had a cheese & cracker picnic and watched Indiana Jones and it was just what the doctor ordered :)
Photo of me - still about the same! (although I feel like it looks smaller than last week. Could be my outfit. Go figure..)

Doug/House Update:
DOUG IS HOME ALL WEEK!!! AMEN! After a trip to San Antonio last week, and an upcoming trip to San Diego on the 18th (no I dont want to talk about my anger with that location...), he gets to stay home like a normal guy all week. We even got to plan meals (Do not remember the last time this happened!). We had a good weekend, both doing some house stuff and some relaxing. Like I said, we had beach time on Sunday and the water was gorgeous (although a little dirty from a recent rainstorm). A new post to come with some of Doug's landscape work!

Here's the man himself taking control of the ultrasound machine, what a "simple computer" it was.
"Don't worry, I got this"
For Noreen
Since I know the last "what veggie are we this week" picture was kind of gross, Doug and I had a little fun with it over the weekend.

18 Weeks
Update:
18 Weeks
22 Weeks to go
(154ish days!)
Kermie Update:
Head to rump, your baby is about 5 1/2 inches long and he weighs almost 7 ounces. He's busy flexing his arms and legs — movements that you'll start noticing more and more in the weeks ahead. His blood vessels are visible through his thin skin, and his ears are now in their final position, although they're still standing out from his head a bit. A protective covering of myelin is beginning to form around his nerves, a process that will continue for a year after he's born. And those in the brain are further specializing into the ones that serve the senses of touch, taste, smell, sight, and hearing. Also, the art of the yawn has been mastered by your baby. In fact, you might catch a glimpse of that adorable yawn if you're getting an ultrasound this month. You'll also catch a glimpse of all the fetal movement your baby's doing — twists, rolls, kicks, and punches. And would you believe your baby is finally big enough for you to start feeling those movements now (I do feel them here and there, but nothing consistent yet)
Carin Update:
So "they" say: Your uterus, now about the size of a cantaloupe, is causing your body's center of gravity to shift, pulling the lower back forward and pushing the abdomen out (so now everyone can see that you’re pregnant!). On top of all that, joint-loosening pregnancy hormones are wreaking havoc on your muscles and ligaments, adding up to one big ouch! (Lately I have been feeling 'sore' very easily, in my hips/legs and always in my back after a long day. Weird!)
Starting to look more round every day. Yesterday I took Doug by surprise in a bathing suit, he said "Where did that come from?!" Depending on what I wear you could just think I have a nice beer belly, and I'm thankful for that. I haven't really gotten too plump anywhere else as of yet (knocking on some major wood over here), and I have been trying to stay active whenever I can. Have finally started seeing some movement upwards on the scale, but nothing too drastic yet. Although after all my weekend holiday indulging I'm sure to see it go up again when I weigh in tomorrow!
Another bathroom photo in a black dress for posterity's sake:
I'd say on a whole, I feel pretty good and most days I feel very much like my normal self. Have had some serious gas pains that make me feel like someone is in there stabbing me all over in the weirdest places, and nothing really helps! It can make me look really funny if I am somewhere weird like work, but so far that hasn't happened....yet.
Went clothes shopping on Sunday and got a TON of great stuff! I am prepared for the months ahead, with both work clothes and casual stuff! I can finally wear a skirt to work with any of my cute summer tops that still fit! Lots of double-duty clothes that will also look good on our European vacation and also for work. Feeling good about that, and now I think I can piece together a decent wardrobe that doesn't only entail dresses.
Doug/House Update:
Doug is off to Texas (San Antonio) today for the week, to return Friday afternoon. All the hard work and travel he's been doing over the last month or so will be put to good use as they go to meet clients and discuss their product. I hope it all goes well and we can have a welcome and much needed week off from travel next week!
Doug did a major garage clean-up and organization, which has been driving him crazy for a long time! It looks great, and was a good use of the rainy/miserable day we had on Sunday! We had a good weekend of relaxation, beach time, BBQ in Sea Bright, shopping/house cleanup, BBQ/swimming and baby time in Bridgewater with the Babic's and more relaxing on Monday night :) Although it wasn't our 'typical' 4th of July fun, it was still really great.
And a baby butt, because who doesnt love that?
Next appointment for the "Level II" scan is next Monday the 11th. This is where we could theorectically find out what we're having... if we were finding out! They will scan for all the major things: heart, liver, organs, bones, etc and make sure everything is on track. Should be a fun, long ultrasound that we are looking forward to!
Finally....
Happy 31st Anniversary to my parents Wade & Jane today!! You guys are the best!
